The math and English placement are extremely important. English 111 or credit is required for upper division classes (300-400 level classes).
The math placement dictates what science and engineering classes you’ll
be able to take.
Typical
1st Semester (if student qualifies for ENGL111
and Calculus) choose from:
4cr EE 161 Computer Aided Problem Solving

Math
Placement:
Students
are placed in math classes based on their math placement test.
All incoming engineering students will take the math placement test.
This test consists of 40 questions covering Algebra 1, Algebra 2, College
Algebra, and Trigonometry. There
are 10 questions per area, and the answers are all right or all wrong – no
partial credit. To pass the topic
area, you need to get 6 out of the 10 correct.
Therefore a score of 6, 6, 6, and 6 would place a student into Calculus
1. Any score lower than a 6 would
indicate a weakness in that area and the student would be required to take the
math indicated. Time is allocated
during student orientation for the math placement test (MPE).
You are allowed to bring a calculator.
The test can be repeated one time.
Students
taking AP calculus will receive credit for Calculus if the pass the AP exam with
a 3 or higher. The student will
then be placed according to the results of the AP exam.
A
sample math placement test can be obtained from: http://www.math.nmsu.edu/

the site, click on student information (left side button) and then on math
placement and then on practice problems.
