Frank Carden Chair for Telemetering and Telecommunications

The Chair for Telemetering and Telecommunications was established in 1990 through the efforts of Dr. Frank Carden and was renamed in his honor in 1999. The major sponsors for the chair were the International Foundation for Telemetering and the State of New Mexico. The current occupant of the chair is Dr. Stephan Horan. Dr. Horan is also Director of the Manual Lujan, Jr. Space Tele-Engineering Program.

Purpose

The purpose is to promote and stimulate technical growth in telemetering and telecommunications and the associated arts and sciences.

Goal

The chair will serve either as the Director of the Manual Lujan, Jr. Space Tele-Engineering Program or will work to enhance the technological areas relevant to the Center. While it is the responsibility of the Director to see that the Center's goals are achieved, the goals of the Chair are similar and are as follows:

About Professor Frank Carden

Dr. Carden received his BSEE in 1959 at Lamar University, and the MSEE and PhD degrees from Oklahoma State University in 1960 and 1965 respectively. In 1965, Dr. Carden came to NMSU to join the faculty of the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 1966, Dr. Carden became the Department Head of the Klipsch School and served in that position until 1987. Dr. Carden presided over the Klipsch School during an unprecedented period of growth in its funded research programs. From 1987 until 1993, Dr. Carden was a Professor in the Klipsch School and served as Director of the M. Lujan Space Tele-Engineering Program, Director of the Telemetering Center of Excellence, and the Director of the Telemetering Center of Excellence. Dr. Carden was the first occupant of the chair and stayed in the chair until his retirement in 1994. Dr. Carden's research and teaching was in the communication systems area with a specific focus on telemetering system design.
