Frank Carden Chair for Telemetering and Telecommunications

The Chair for Telemetering and Telecommunications was established in 1990 through the efforts of Dr. Frank Carden and was renamed in his honor in 1999. The major sponsors for the chair were the International Foundation for Telemetering and the State of New Mexico. The current occupant of the chair is Dr. Stephan Horan. Dr. Horan is also Director of the Manual Lujan, Jr. Space Tele-Engineering Program.

Purpose

The purpose is to promote and stimulate technical growth in telemetering and telecommunications and the associated arts and sciences.

Goal

The chair will serve either as the Director of the Manual Lujan, Jr. Space Tele-Engineering Program or will work to enhance the technological areas relevant to the Center. While it is the responsibility of the Director to see that the Center's goals are achieved, the goals of the Chair are similar and are as follows:

• Graduate MS and PhD students with the knowledge to understand, develop, design and research telemetering and telecommunication systems. Recruit, supervise and obtain support for graduate students in the program. Develop specific TM courses that contribute to the need of students on campus and the TM engineering community.
• Stimulate interaction between the manufacturers of equipment, the users, NASA, and the government ranges.
• Perform relevant research and development.
• Obtain, utilize and disseminate relevant R&D results. Develop short courses and seminars which will be used to facilitate this activity.
• Provide a unique graduate program that will be available to practicing engineers and those early in their careers.
• Assist industry in recruiting graduates who have a strong background in communication systems.
• Facilitate interaction among students, faculty and industry, NASA and the government ranges.
• Support the International Telemetering Conference and maintain a close working relationship with the IFT and attend the IFT meetings.
• Obtain outside research and development funds to support the program and graduate students. Obtain additional endowment funds for the chair to assure longevity and viability of the chair.

About Professor Frank Carden

Dr. Carden received his BSEE in 1959 at Lamar University, and the MSEE and PhD degrees from Oklahoma State University in 1960 and 1965 respectively. In 1965, Dr. Carden came to NMSU to join the faculty of the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 1966, Dr. Carden became the Department Head of the Klipsch School and served in that position until 1987. Dr. Carden presided over the Klipsch School during an unprecedented period of growth in its funded research programs. From 1987 until 1993, Dr. Carden was a Professor in the Klipsch School and served as Director of the M. Lujan Space Tele-Engineering Program, Director of the Telemetering Center of Excellence, and the Director of the Telemetering Center of Excellence. Dr. Carden was the first occupant of the chair and stayed in the chair until his retirement in 1994. Dr. Carden's research and teaching was in the communication systems area with a specific focus on telemetering system design.
