Colonel Arthur D. Hurtado was born in Taos, New Mexico on November 18, 1944. He graduated from Taos High School in 1962.
He completed his first two years of college at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Later he transferred to Southwest Missouri State University where he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate, commissioned a Regular Army Second Lieutenant in the Infantry and served his initial tour as a rifle platoon leader with the 5th Mechanized Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. In Vietnam he served with the 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade first as a mortar and rifle platoon leader and after reverting to Military Intelligence, he served as the Interrogation of Prisoners of War Platoon Leader.
Colonel Hurtado has served as the Commander of the 66th MI Detachment, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas; Technical Representative with the Scientific and Technical information Team, Europe; Executive Officer of the 533rd MI Battalion, 3rd Armored Division,Germany; Assistant Executive Secretary to the Scientific and Technical Intelligence Committee for the Director of Central Intelligence; Force Integration Staff Officer, Headquarters, Department of Army, Deputy Chief of Staff For Operations and Plans; Commander of the 165th MI Battalion, 205th MI Brigade, Germany; and, Program Manager, Kinetic Energy Interceptors, Strategic Defense Initiative Organization. Office of the Secretary of Defense.
He has attended the Infantry Officers Basic Course, the Military Intelligence Officers Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, the Defense Systems Management College, and was a Research Fellow at the National War College. He received a Master's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico State University in 1978 and was elected into the National Electrical Engineering Honor Society - Eta Kappa Nu. He is a nationally certified Project Manager Professional by the Project Manager Institute.
His decorations include the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, National Intelligence Achievement Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Legion of Merit, and the Defense Superior Service Medal. His badges include the Parachute Basic Wings, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Department of the Army General Staff Identification Badge, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge.
He is currently the Project Manager, Electronic Warfare and Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.
Colonel Hurtado is married to the former Dianna L. Patterson of Arlington, Texas. They have one daughter, Alison.
